Harsh movement to my right abruptly ended my sleep.

I was a light sleeper anyway, but this was out of the ordinary. I took a few seconds to focus on the sounds in the room before I opened my eyes. On the off chance someone broke into our house, I didn’t want them to know I was awake until I had an idea what was happening.

Daddy taught me to always keep the upper hand.

“Shit,” Fletcher cursed, shooting out of bed, panting.

He was already out of the room and heading down the stairs when I sat up. I placed my hand on his side of the bed, smoothing over the damp, warm sheets.

He’d had a nightmare. That was the only explanation for why he’d fled the bedroom so quickly. It could have been caused by our separation when I was with Sandra Jane, but he hadn’t had any nightmares since I’d come home. Even when he’d been on Cash-duty, I’d been aware of him. Rick and I both checked on him, if only to reassure ourselves he was still okay.

I’d give him a few minutes, an opportunity to sort himself out. But if he didn’t come back to bed soon, I would hunt him down. Give him whatever comfort I could from the demons that plagued him.

Rick turned over, sliding an arm around my waist, and I settled back down in the bed. Not closing my eyes, just waiting as Rick snuggled closer.

My sweet Rick. He’d come to bed much later than normal, probably giving Fletcher time with me alone. And watching over Cash, although I was surprised he even came to bed with Cash free in the house. Or maybe he put him back in the cell.

After Fletcher and I had gone a few rounds, we’d headed downstairs to find Rick in the kitchen with a full spread on the island. The potato casserole was there, alongside a whole baked chicken and a beet and orange salad.

“I see how it is, Big Guy. I get potatoes, and Drew gets the full food pyramid,” Fletcher had said, slapping Rick on the shoulder.

My pincushion had been in an effervescent mood the entire evening, and I smiled to see Rick and Fletcher interacting with such ease. They needed each other as much as I needed them.

We’d enjoyed an easy banter until Rick had sighed, looked at the clock, then back to me. “We should probably let Cash out. He’s had enough time to cool off and might be hungry.”

Fletcher had scoffed. “He definitely doesn’t deserve this kind of meal. Take a stale peanut butter sandwich down…with tap water to drink.”

Rick had whipped his head around so fast, giving Fletcher a comically shocked look. We had a good laugh and, in the end, we let Cash out. He’d apologized under Rick’s warning glare, but it wasn’t heartfelt. Not even a little.

He didn’t see anything wrong with the way he tried to bulldoze everything and everyone to get his way.

The entire experience of the previous day had just left a sour taste in my mouth.
